Organic Food and Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week & Tradeshow

Posted by

Soil Health – Local Farmers Shared Learning and Discussion was facilitated by Ruth Knight, P. Ag. CCA -ON, Organic Consultant Inc.

Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week 2019 was a great event. It was held at the Elmwood Community Centre in Elmwood, Ontario, Canada from January 3rd to January 9, 2019.

Major sponsors for Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week 2019 were Farm Credit Canada, BDO (Binder Dijker Otte), among others.

Various presentations were held and some were CEU (continuing education unit) accredited.

On the 9th was Ecological Day that was very informative just as the previous days.

On that day there were various topics and speakers.

For example;

  • Soil Health – Local Farmers Shared Learning and Discussion was facilitated by Ruth Knight, P. Ag. CCA -ON, Organic Consultant Inc.
  • The Story Behind Regenerative Organic Certification was conducted by Mary from Rodale Institute via video conference
  • Holistic Herd Health by Dr. Talia Fletcher, DVM, Veterinarian, Markdale Veterinary Services
  • Producer Panel: Extending the Growing/Marketing Season (Tips for Market and Home Gardeners);
  • ~ Operating a Winter CSA by Leslie Moskovits, Cedar Down Farm,
  • ~ Growing Winter Greens by Patrick Kitchen, Sideroad Farm
  • ~ Growing Herbs for Herbal Teas by Susie Stoeckli, Stoeckli Organics

At the Soil Health session, many came away with information about reducing tillage and when is best to have cover crops, among other useful knowledge.

The Holistic Herd Health presentation certainly made farmers more aware of the factors that may contribute to the overall well-being of their livestock.

All sessions were informative and Cariporter Organic got to meet many farmers and related with three (3) more in-depth. These farmers are Nicole from Buschbeck Farm, Ray Robertson from Grey County Agricultural Services Centre, and Skyler from Black Sheep Farm.

Most farmers either have organic operations or strive to. So the Grey Bruce area and by extension Grey County of Ontario is a great place for organic food.
