YOUR HEALTH

Being healthy is one of those conditions that many yearn for, whether it is what most of us aspire to be or not.

Health is an important topic and an area that many should take seriously. And as we go on with our lives and more things become of concern, then health begins to have different meanings. The different types or meanings can be applied in various ways for numerous reasons. The more recognized types of health thus far are physical, mental, emotional, financial, spiritual, and psychological. Social and environmental health have become an area of interest as well.

To get a simple understanding of health in terms of our overall well-being, let’s use the principles of the World Health Organization (WHO) as a guide.

The WHO is an international organization within the United Nations that had its constitution come into effect on April 7, 1948. It has over 7,000 people in more than 150 countries doing valuable work.

The WHO’s bases that we are going to use as a guide for health are:

  • “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
  • The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social conditions.
  • The health of all peoples is fundamental to the attainment of peace and security and is dependent on the fullest co-operation of individuals and States.
  • The achievement of any State in the promotion and protection of health is of value to all.
  • Unequal development in different countries in the promotion of health and control of diseases, especially communicable disease, is a common danger.
  • Healthy development of the child is of basic importance; the ability to live harmoniously in a changing total environment is essential to such development.
  • The extension to all peoples of the benefits of medical, psychological and related knowledge is essential to the fullest attainment of health.
  • Informed opinion and active co-operation on the part of the public are of the utmost importance in the improvement of the health of the people.
  • Governments have a responsibility for the health of their peoples which can be fulfilled only by the provision of adequate health and social measures.”[1]

Medical News Today defines health as:

  • “Health can be defined as physical, mental, and social well-being, and as a resource for living a full life.
  • It refers not only to the absence of disease, but the ability to recover and bounce back from illness and other problems.
  • Factors for good health include genetics, the environment, relationships, and education.
  • A healthful diet, exercise, screening for diseases, and coping strategies can all enhance a person's health.”[2]

Maverick Health refers to good health as “… actively and purposefully behaving in ways that leave you stronger, better nourished, less stressed, and more comfortable in your body and mind. Good health is more than not being sick. When you are healthy, you enjoy many benefits. Good health is possessing the energy and motivation to seek the things you most want without the distractions or stresses of illness. Good health is being hardy and sound in body and mind. If you are in good health you are able to enjoy all the good things in life without guilt or shame because you are satisfied and confident in your ability to moderate your behaviors. Good health is being free of addictions and compulsions.”[3]

As has been noted in many ways, good nutrition is an important component of being healthy. This is fundamental as it helps with other things such as physical activity, weight and pain management, reduce the risk of getting diseases such as heart disease and cancer, and other types of health concerns such as emotional, mental, psychological, financial and spiritual health.

Some simple ways you may achieve good nutrition are:

  • Eating organic food from your own backyard (How to grow organically) or directly from an organic farmer (eg. Cariporter Organic);
  • Eating lots of fruits and vegetables such as oranges and carrots;
  • Eating food with fiber such as whole grains for example whole wheat bread;
  • Eating lean protein food such as lean beef, eggs, beans, …;
  • Drinking water as is required;
  • And avoiding processed foods such as sodas, cakes, …

Factors that may influence your health are:

  • The environment;
  • Ensuring individuals and communities are aware about health;
  • Personal hygiene;
  • Healthcare;
  • And diseases.

The Environment

A clean surrounding can help to prevent the spread of diseases and may reduce depression.

Awareness

With awareness, people get to understand causes of ill-health, how to prevent them, and to improve their health.

Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is basically keeping yourself clean and free from germs. So washing your hands before eating helps to prevent you from ingesting microscopic organisms that usually cause illnesses.

For example, there are bacteria that cause tuberculosis, viruses that cause the common cold, fungi that cause ringworm, and parasites like the Plasmodium parasites that are transported by the anopheles mosquitoes that cause malaria.

Healthcare

How easy it is for you to access healthcare can determine your quality of health. So if you have health insurance and you are able to go to a health facility, then you can quickly have an illness remedied, or have regular check-ups that can help to prevent sickness.

Diseases

Diseases usually derive from microorganisms that come into contact with humans. For example, dengue fever that is caused by microorganisms like viruses that are carried by mosquitoes.

Other ways diseases come about in humans are abnormal cell functions that lead to being ill such as sickle cell, which has irregular cells called sickle hemoglobin or hemoglobin S in their red blood cells.

The WHO goes further to consider the determinants of health as being:

  • “Income and social status - higher income and social status are linked to better health. The greater the gap between the richest and poorest people, the greater the differences in health.
  • Education – low education levels are linked with poor health, more stress and lower self-confidence.
  • Physical environment – safe water and clean air, healthy workplaces, safe houses, communities and roads all contribute to good health. Employment and working conditions – people in employment are healthier, particularly those who have more control over their working conditions
  • Social support networks – greater support from families, friends and communities is linked to better health. Culture - customs and traditions, and the beliefs of the family and community all affect health.
  • Genetics - inheritance plays a part in determining lifespan, healthiness and the likelihood of developing certain illnesses. Personal behavior and coping skills – balanced eating, keeping active, smoking, drinking, and how we deal with life’s stresses and challenges all affect health.
  • Health services - access and use of services that prevent and treat disease influences health
  • Gender - Men and women suffer from different types of diseases at different ages.”[4]

So what does the different types of health meant?

Physical Health

This refers to taking care of your human body by primarily exercising and nourishing the body with vitamins and minerals.

Mental/Emotional/Psychological/Social Health

Normally, the definition for mental health is very similar for emotional, psychological and social health. So mental health encompasses emotional, psychological and social well-being. This involves you determining how you handle stress, how you deal with others, how you make decisions, how you feel, how you think, what actions you take, how you enjoy life, you realizing your abilities, and so on.

Spiritual Health/Wellness

According to the University of California, Riverside, “Spiritual Wellness is a personal matter involving values and beliefs that provide a purpose in our lives. While different individuals may have different views of what spiritualism is, it is generally considered to be the search for meaning and purpose in human existence, leading one to strive for a state of harmony with oneself and others while working to balance inner needs with the rest of the world. The National Wellness Institute says spiritual wellness follows the following tenets:

  • It is better to ponder the meaning of life for ourselves and to be tolerant of the beliefs of others than to close our minds and become intolerant.
  • It is better to live each day in a way that is consistent with our values and beliefs than to do otherwise and feel untrue to ourselves.

Reaching Spiritual Wellness

It is important for everyone to explore what they believe is their own sense of meaning and purpose.

The path to spiritual wellness may involve meditation, prayer, affirmations, or specific spiritual practices that support your connection to a higher power or belief system. Yoga and meditation can also help you develop spiritual wellness.

Having compassion, the capacity for love and forgiveness, altruism, joy, and fulfillment help you enjoy your spiritual health. Your religious faith, values, beliefs, principles, and morals define your spirituality.

If you are a person engaged in the process of spiritual wellness, you are willing and able to transcend yourself in order to question the meaning and purpose in your life and the lives of others. In addition, you seek to find harmony between that which lies within and the social and physical forces that come from outside.”[5]
